The **lateral costal breathing** you hear over and over in Pilates and yoga classes is based on a very simple principle: drawing the breath not into your belly, but into the side walls of your ribs. This way of breathing frees the diaphragm, lets the pelvic-floor muscles work rhythmically, and prevents shoulder/neck tension. As a result, your core stays stable even while in motion. **Practical tip** Lie flat and place your hands on either side of your ribs. Breathe in through your nose, trying to open your ribs outward. Out quietly through your mouth, drawing the ribs back together. 10 reps, 3 times a day.
